Almost finished with first round of revisions

It hasn’t been easy, with only small bits and pieces of time and forcing myself to write even when I’d rather browse books on Amazon.com. Sometimes I’d even get up and clean something (hello? Toilets?)in order to avoid editing and rewriting. Heck, I’m posting this instead of working on my last two chapters. As I tell my mom (my best critic), “If I didn’t procrastinate, I’d never get anything done!” She says she understands that.

So here’s a dilemma…I don’t know what to rename my novel. My friend Pat I. mentioned The Haven. My husband prefers the original title Knucklebone. What to do, what to do. I joked I should call it Haven and Hell. But in all seriousness, I want such a phenomenal title, no one will be able to resist picking it up to check out the plot. Of course, isn’t that what all authors want? Question is, do they succeed? What’s the best title you’ve ever heard?

Hopefully, I’ll have the next draft out to my agent by Thanksgiving. Then, maybe I can relax, clean toilets, shop Amazon, all without a guilty conscious.

The Astronomicon

The Astronomicon was a blast. Notable authors such as Mike Resnick, Nancy Kress, Peter Prellwitz, John Stormm, Nick DiChario, Lois Gresh, Daniel Rabuzzi and Josepha Sherman spoke on discussion panels and hung out to chat with conference attendees. I was honored to have the chance to talk about literature and life with several of these marvelous talents. Although somewhat intimidated at first, I soon felt at ease sitting beside well-published authors to cover the topics of gender roles in literature, what makes YA novels successful, and whether or not anyone cares about short stories anymore.

As a fan of live music, I was thrilled to have the chance to listen to the husband and wife team who played their own songs and music on acoustic guitars to a rapt audience. Lisa Rose and Mike Flash’s music can be heard on their site: Lisarose.com.

As a writer or  a reader, I suggest attending a science fiction and fantasy  for an unusual yet fascinating experience. The Masquerade Ball alone would be worth the trip.

Event Schedule

As I’ve previously written, I will be a participant at the Astronomicon Sc-Fi and Fantasy Convention. My schedule is as follows, if you wish to be present:

Saturday at 1:00 join me for a writing workshop on Showing vs. Telling in literature. I’ll present tips on how to bring a banal manuscript to life and get everyone writing with an improvisational writing exercise. Be prepared to share and critique!

That evening at 10:00, for all you night owls, I’ll be on a  panel discussing Cross-Gender Writing (male/female POV) with Peter Prellwitz, Daniel Rabuzzi, and Lois Gresh.

Sunday at 12:00 pm I’ll be on the Writing for the YA Audience Panel with Lois Gresh, Josepha Sherman, Carl Frederick, Daniel Rabuzzi and Peter Prellwitz…bring your questions and concerns!

Also Sunday at 1:00 join me, Jonathan Sherwood and Craig DeLancey for a discussion about Short Stories: Does Anyone Still Care?

There are many other panels and readings to attend, so come join us for a great conference for writers and readers alike.
